Reducing the amount of processing chemicals we use is one of our top priorities. More than 99% of our photographs are now taken digitally, and all our prints are processed by our fleet of digital printers. As a result of being completely digital, we use less power and have less of a need for reprints.
We’re also helping to reduce emissions by using electric transport vehicles within our laboratory.
We operate a company car fleet, supplying our photographers with vehicles specially selected for their eco-friendly, low emission specifications.
We also provide, for those members of our laboratory staff who want it, a company minibus service, to bring them to and from work each day. This proves convenient for them, efficient for us and economical for the environment, reducing the carbon footprint of the rush-hour commute.
Mounting and backing boards are essential parts of our business. All of the mounts we use are made from a 50/50 mix of recycled materials and materials from managed resources. Our in-house manufacturing of mounts and frames dramatically reduces the need to transport bulky, ready-made products to our laboratory.
Our publicity material is printed on Greencoat paper and board – a brand with the highest sustainability credentials. Even our backing board and packaging is made from recycled material wherever possible. Photographs are packaged into bags made from recyclable materials and despatched in custom-made card boxes made from recycled – and recyclable – materials.
In January 2009 we installed a state of the art ‘Metafix’ silver recovery unit in our laboratory enabling us to recover the silver content in our waste chemistry, which previously had to be transferred by road tanker to a reprocessing plant.
We’re minimising waste wherever we can by recycling all our shrink, stretch and pallet wrap. All waste from the manufacturing process, and the materials used for our frames is recycled. Soon, all our presentation bags will be completely biodegradable too.
This means that our contribution to landfill has so far reduced by half — a trend we’re keen to continue.
The canteen that caters for our laboratory staff, routinely prepares meals using ingredients grown on-site in the kitchen garden. Allowing our staff to enjoy quality organic produce and at no carbon cost to the environment.
